How To Select All Video Clips To The Right in DaVinci Resolve

(It's Alt + Y on Windows, or command + Y on Mac.) That's the keyboard shortcut for selecting everything to the right in Davinci Resolve 18. Often, you want to select all video clips to the right of your playhead. This is done when the project length exceeds workspace area, and you want to select all clips from current position to end of the clip to cut or move that span of content. Too many people edit in Davinci before learning this time-saving trick!

How to select all clips right of playhead in DaVinci Resolve 18

How to select all audio and video clips to the right of playhead in DaVinci Resolve

Let's get straight to the point (or continue reading the article for more details.)

Press Alt + Y on Windows (or command + Y keyboard shortcut on Mac) in DaVinci Resolve to execute a command equivalent of Select Forward Tool in Premiere Pro, which selects all clips right of playhead. (Select all clips to the right is handled differently.)

Working with editing software for a long time, eventually you will need a way to select all clips to the right. This is especially useful when your videos get very long, and you can't see all clips in the project past right edge of the timeline.

Instead of moving the mouse or zooming in on the timeline, it's a lot easier to use Select Right tool.

In DaVinci Resolve, you can select everything to the right of the current position on timeline.

You can also choose whether to select only the video parts, only the audio, or both.

How to select everything to the right in DaVinci Resolve 18 using equivalent of Track Select Forward Tool in Premiere Pro

Creating a selection around all video clips to the right of playhead position (including the frame it is currently on,) is done using Resolve's Select Right command.

This is similar to Premiere Pro's Select Forward Tool (DaVinci Resolve often mirrors Premiere Pro!)

Select Forward Tool in DaVinci Resolve (select all video clips to the right)

To select everything to the right follow these steps:

    1. Switch to the Edit Mode in DaVinci Resolve (Shift + 4)
    2. Navigate to the video frame on the timeline you want to start selection from.
    3. Press Alt + Y on Windows or option + Y on a Mac to execute Select Right command.

All of the audio and video clips to the right of current playhead position will be selected.

How to select everything before playhead?

While working on this DaVinci Resolve tutorial I found out there is a way to do the opposite: select everything before the playhead.

And that shortcut is Ctrl + Y. It will select all clips before playhead, including the clip the playhead is currently on (even if it snaps directly at its start.) So technically, you will select everything before playhead and 1 clip forward.

How to alternate between only video or audio tracks:

First make sure to select everything to the right with Alt + Y as stated above. Without this you won't be able to toggle between audio and video selection.

Now, with everything selected to the right, toggle between selecting only audio or only video on your track, press press Alt + U multiple times.

You can also use the Select Right command by right-clicking in the timeline and selecting it from the context menu.

Note that Select Right command will only select clips and edits in the timeline, and will not select other types of elements such as nodes in the color grading page or audio tracks in the Fairlight page.

Key phrases you might be typing to find topics in this tutorial:

    3. Select all clips to the right
    4. Select everything to the right davinci
    5. Select all to right
    6. Select everything to the right

Basically, saying the same thing in different ways ;-)

Hope this helped some of you!
