Midjourney Portrait Prompt Examples
A few ideas on generating portrait prompts with Midjourney AI
I like to write about AI, image processing and ChatGPT. But my work is not limited to these subjects. Oh, and I never use AI to generate my content.
Oh and one more thing guys...I'm an independent author, I would be grateful if you shared this article around. So I created this button below, just click and paste the link elsewhere.

V5 is here, I'm currently working on next article about portraits in V5. One thing V5 is much better is portrait photography. Literally it's just insane.
But because in V5 quality is so much easier to achieve, the type of tips and tricks to control the image have also changed from V4. (Working on that next).
Guys! Pls share this article on Discord. I added CSS style to prompts below to match Discord CSS ๐ And getting more views motivates me to continue improving it.
It's not perfect but it isn't a text-filler. It just takes 1 minute of your time to read and I promise you'll be enlightened not only on the subject of making AI portraits but get better at understanding how to generate AI art
So, what are the best Midjourney tips for generating portraits?
It's easy to get addicted to making Midjourney prompts. Making simple portraits is easy. But due to how image diffusion works, controlling added complexity may not be straightforward, especially for beginners who are just getting started with AI art.
Portraits can be used as social media avatars, creating your own characters for a book or video game, recreating your own photo in a particular style, and a multitude of other usecases!
Midjourney Portrait Prompt Examples
Below you will find several examples of creating a portrait of a young woman with freckles and blue eyes. We'll start simple with just a basic portrait, looking straight at the camera.
Portrait Prompt Example 1: Baseline Portrait
Portraits are simple to generate with Midjourney. You just need to be specific about details. For example to generate portraits in the image above, special features were chosen.
Those features were freckles and blue eyes, more specifically crystal blue eyes. Remember, yours could be different. Pick a different hair color, be specific.
Now, there are probably infinite ways to generate portraits with midjourney. However, I like to start my portrait prompt with the phrase high texture quality. This also works well for other ideas.
Here's an example of a simple portrait prompt:
This prompt will produce the portrait you've already seen in header image of this article. From here on we can continue adding to and modifying the original prompt.
Portrait Prompt Example 2: With Wreath In Her Hair
For example, let's add with wreath in her hair to the end of the previous prompt:
This prompt produced the following images:
Let's try something else.
Portrait Prompt Example 3: Sunglasses
Here's the same prompt with wearing sunglasses added:
Here are the portrait images generated using this prompt:
As you've noticed, something isn't right. Sunglasses appear to have see-through glass, instead of shades. Midjourney generated the shape of sunglasses, without darkening them.
How To Add More Weight To A Theme Or An Object?
To make an object stand out above others, you can use weights.
This is a classic problem with keyword weights, encountered in many other cases as well. Because the prompt is intermixed with multiple objects, Midjourney doesn't really have a way of knowing if sunglasses should be darker.
To fix this issue, you can add ::10 right after the keyword sunglasses (without spaces.)
This will add "a weight of 10" to the keyword sunglasses.
You can also try to explicitly specify dark sunglasses, but you're risking your whole image turning darker, the portrait subject's hair changed to black, and similar things like that.
Creating a perfect portrait is a balancing act between your creativity, keywords and weights.
This might add a bit more shade to sunglasses.
Another portrait generated with Midjourney
You can try adding props or special effects like smoke. I used the keywords "smoke" and "smokey room" to generate the following portraits:

How To Make Midjourney Portrait Prompts From Photo
You can give Midjourney a photo to use as a reference for your portrait prompt.
To make a portrait prompt from a photo:- Locate URL address of an existing photo you want to use as the reference.
- Type /imagine and paste your photo URL as first parameter of the prompt.
- Type space, and continue writing your prompt.
If you want to use your own photo, upload it, or tweet it, and then extract the URL from the online page you posted your photo on (Right click on the photo, and select "Copy Image Location" option.)
Here is a Midjourney portrait that was generated by using a photo:

(Note that Midjourney will convert your original image to a short URL, and you can reuse this short URL in future prompts, instead of the long address.)
